Glass Tempering
Greater Durability for High-Performance Glass Components
Tempering allows the mechanical strength of suitable types of glass to be specifically increased. This process creates compressive stresses in the glass surface, which can make the component more resistant to mechanical stress and—depending on the method used - thermal stress.
Different methods are available depending on the type of glass, thickness, and application. Schröder Spezialglas offers both thermal and chemical tempering and selects the appropriate method based on the specific application.
In thermal tempering, the glass is first heated in a controlled manner and then cooled in a targeted way. This creates a characteristic stress state with compressive stresses on the surface and tensile stresses in the interior. This process can increase the mechanical strength and thermal shock resistance compared to untempered glass.
Chemical tempering, on the other hand, is based on ion exchange at the glass surface. In this process, smaller ions in the glass are replaced by larger ones, thereby generating compressive stresses in areas close to the surface. The process is particularly suitable for specific types of glass and can also be used for thin or geometrically complex components.
Which process is appropriate depends on the material, dimensions, geometry, and the required properties. Schröder Spezialglas takes these requirements into account when selecting the appropriate tempering process and tailors the processing to the specific component.
